Sustainability & Ethics

Telares Nicaragua products are fairly-traded and ethically-produced. We take great pride in the positive impact our business has on our lives and our community, and are committed to the principles of sustainable production.

Telares operates as a cooperative, meaning that each of the 8 women has an equal say in business decisions and each member of the group is paid fairly and regularly according to what she produces. All of our production is done in our workshop under safe and comfortable working conditions.

We believe in sustainability for our community. As we train the next generation of weavers, we are building their capacities and empowering them as young women as well as instilling in them the importance of carrying on cultural traditions and being proud of their identities as indigenous women of Nicaragua.

Our products are hand-made and environmentally-friendly. We source our fibers from a factory in El Salvador that takes old clothing and reduces it to the fiber materials. We don’t have to use any dyes and are giving these fibers beautiful new lives in our weaving. Occasionally we source second-hand clothing directly and unravel it to use the stronger threads in carpets and table runners. All of the production that we do is done on food pedaled looms and sewing machines, so does not produce waste or use harmful chemicals.
